Samhain Ancestor Supper
Intention: Honor loved ones and ancestors who have died
Ingredients / Materials
- Photos or mementos of ancestors
- A white candle for each guest of honor
- A place setting for them
- Simple foods they loved
- A chair left empty
When
The evening of 31 October, or any time in early autumn when the veil is said to be thin.
Method
- Set a table with an extra place for each ancestor you wish to honor. Add their photo and a candle.
- Serve a small plate of food for them first, then yourself.
- Some traditions eat in silence (a "dumb supper"). Others share stories aloud.
- Speak the names of those you're honoring, and say what they meant to you.
- When the meal ends, thank them and snuff the candles.
- Leave the ancestors' plate outside for wildlife, or compost it.
Care
Grief can be heavy. Check in with yourself and with guests, and keep the mood gentle.
Fire safety: burn only in a heat-proof dish, never leave flames unattended, and keep away from curtains, paper, and pets.
