Anu is the sky god and, in the earliest layers of Mesopotamian religion, the highest authority in the pantheon, though as time passed his role became increasingly distant and ceremonial as gods like Enlil and Marduk took more active roles in myth and worship, a common pattern for very old "sky father" deities.
