Dian Cecht

Intention: Approach healing skill and its real limits

Offerings & Symbols

  • A healing herb
  • A small silver object (he made a working silver arm for Nuada)
  • Water from a healing well

Culture: Irish (Celtic)   Domain: Medicine, physicians

Dian Cecht is the chief physician of the Tuatha Dé Danann, credited with crafting Nuada's silver hand and maintaining a healing well capable of reviving the dying; his myth is complicated by his jealous killing of his own son Miach, whose skill had surpassed his own, a story that treats even a healer's virtue as imperfect.

Associations

Medical skill, healing wells, the limits and imperfections of expertise, hard truths about jealousy.

Ways people honor him (modern)

  • Support real medical professionals and evidence-based healing practice
  • Reflect honestly on professional jealousy and its costs
  • Keep water from a meaningful source on the altar
  • Read the full, morally complicated tale of Miach's death alongside his healing feats

Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
