The Cherubim
Intention: Ask for faithful guardianship of what is sacred
Offerings & Symbols
- A guardian-themed image
- Something protected carefully
- A key
Culture: Jewish and Christian angelology (Genesis, Exodus, Ezekiel)
The Cherubim appear repeatedly in Hebrew scripture, guarding the entrance to Eden after the Fall and forming part of the Ark of the Covenant's design; they are traditionally understood, distinct from the popular "cherub" cupid-baby image, as powerful guardian beings of striking, complex appearance.
Associations
Faithful guardianship, protection of the sacred, complex, awe-inspiring presence.
Ways people honor this choir (modern)
- Read Genesis 3 and Ezekiel's visions directly for their original, striking descriptions
- Protect something genuinely sacred or important to you with real vigilance
- Keep a key or guardian image on the altar
- Note the real difference between the biblical Cherubim and the popular "cherub" image found in later art
Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
