Imbolc Brigid's Cross Ritual
Intention: Welcome the returning light and honor Brigid
Ingredients / Materials
- Rushes, straw, or paper strips for the cross
- A white or yellow candle
- A small dish of milk or bread
- A ribbon or cloth to hang outside
When
Around 1 to 2 February, the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox.
Method
- Tidy and open a window for a moment to let in fresh air.
- Light the candle and say: "Brigid, bring light to this home."
- Weave a Brigid's cross: fold one rush, wrap a second around it at a right angle, then keep rotating and adding new rushes until you have four arms. Tie off the ends.
- Hang the finished cross over a door for the year.
- Leave the ribbon or cloth outside overnight to be blessed by Brigid; it is traditionally used the next day for healing and protection.
- Offer the milk or bread outdoors, then close the ritual by snuffing the candle.
Reflection
What are you ready to grow this spring?
Fire safety: burn only in a heat-proof dish, never leave flames unattended, and keep away from curtains, paper, and pets.
