Pan, half-goat and half-man, is a god of the wild countryside, shepherds and their flocks, and the panpipes he is said to have invented after the nymph Syrinx transformed into reeds to escape him. His sudden appearance could inspire sudden, irrational fear in travelers, giving us the word "panic."
