Dionysus, born of Zeus and the mortal Semele, is a god of wine, ritual madness and release, and of theater, which grew from festivals in his honor. He is a god of boundaries dissolved: between civilization and wildness, sobriety and ecstasy, mortal and divine, and his worshippers (the maenads) were famous for frenzied, liberating rites.
