Mithra

Culture: Ancient Persian (pre-Zoroastrian and Zoroastrian)   Domain: Contracts, oaths, the sun, truthful bonds between people

Mithra presides over contracts, covenants and truthful bonds between people, a role of real practical importance in Persian religious life; his worship later spread west and, transformed considerably, became the separate Roman mystery religion of Mithraism, distinct from his original Persian form.

Associations

Contracts and oaths, the sun, truthful bonds, fairness in agreements.

Ways people honor him (modern)

  • Honor contracts and agreements with genuine, consistent integrity
  • Research the distinction between Persian Mithra and the later, separate Roman Mithraic mysteries
  • Keep a written agreement on the altar as a token of your own honored commitments
  • Reflect on trust built through consistently kept promises

Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
