Menulis

Intention: Ask for the moon's steady, if sometimes uneven, guidance

Offerings & Symbols

  • Moon water
  • A silver object
  • Something tracked over changing phases

Culture: Baltic (Lithuanian/Latvian)   Also spelled: Mėnulis   Domain: The moon

Menulis is the moon god of Baltic mythology, married in some tellings to Saule the sun, with a marriage that famously fails due to his own infidelity, for which he is punished, a folk tale often read as explaining the moon's changing, uneven phases in contrast to the sun's steady daily path.

Associations

The moon's changing phases, imperfect but genuine guidance, consequences of broken trust.

Ways people honor him (modern)

  • Track the moon's actual phases as a grounding monthly practice
  • Reflect honestly on trust broken and its real consequences
  • Keep a silver token on the altar
  • Research the Baltic folk tale explaining his changing phases through his own myth

Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
