Math, a powerful magician-king in the Mabinogion's Fourth Branch, must keep his feet in the lap of a virgin at all times except during war, a condition that drives much of the branch's plot when it's violated; he ultimately uses his own magic to punish wrongdoing and restore order, including transforming Gwydion and his brother into animals as penance.
Associations
Magical authority, fair (if strict) justice, wisdom exercised through real consequence.
Ways people honor him (modern)
- Apply consequences fairly and consistently, even to those close to you
- Reflect on unusual personal obligations you honor quietly
- Read the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogion in full for his role
- Study magical ethics as a serious practice, not an afterthought
Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
