Spirit of the Sabbat
Intention: Mark each turn of the Wheel of the Year with intention
Offerings & Symbols
- A seasonal token appropriate to the current sabbat
- A candle in a seasonal color
- Something harvested or gathered from the current season
Culture: Modern Wicca and neopaganism (20th century onward)
The eight sabbats of the modern Wheel of the Year, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, Mabon and Samhain, together form a full seasonal cycle widely observed across Wiccan and neopagan practice; the combined framework of all eight festivals together (as opposed to individual older festivals that inspired some of them) is itself a 20th-century synthesis, most associated with Gerald Gardner and Ross Nichols.
Associations
The full seasonal cycle, ritual marking of time, connection to nature's yearly rhythm.
Ways people honor this cycle (modern)
- Mark each of the eight sabbats with a small, consistent personal ritual
- Adjust seasonal celebrations to match your actual local climate and growing season, not only the traditional Northern European calendar
- Keep a Wheel of the Year image on your main altar as a yearly reference
- Read about the mid-20th-century synthesis of the eight-fold wheel from earlier, separate traditions
Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
