Culture: Finnish/Karelian Domain: The North (Pohjola), powerful magic, guardianship
Louhi is the formidable mistress of Pohjola, the "North" realm in the Kalevala, a powerful witch-queen who repeatedly challenges and bargains with the epic's heroes, including commissioning the magical Sampo (a device of endless prosperity) and later fighting fiercely to keep or recover it. Modern readings increasingly treat her as a complex, capable ruler rather than a simple villain.
