Crystal Safety: Water and Sun

Intention: Know which stones can't be soaked, sunned, or made into elixirs

Not every crystal can be cleansed the same way. Check before you soak or sun-charge a stone.

Avoid water

  • Selenite: dissolves and dulls
  • Malachite: contains copper and is toxic. Don't make crystal-infused water with it.
  • Pyrite and hematite: can rust or tarnish
  • Celestite, calcite, fluorite (prolonged): softer stones that can dull or damage

Avoid long direct sun

  • Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine (natural), aventurine: can fade

Safe for most cleansing

  • Clear quartz, black tourmaline, obsidian, carnelian: generally sturdy

Elixirs

Use the indirect method: place the crystal in a sealed glass jar set inside a larger container of water, so the stone never touches what you drink. Better still, skip drinking and use crystals for topical or ritual work only.

When in doubt

Use moonlight, smoke, sound, or a bed of clear quartz or selenite (kept dry).
