Hestia is the eldest of the Olympian generation and the gentlest presence among them: goddess of the hearth fire, she gave up her Olympian seat rather than take part in the squabbles among the other gods, and received the first and last portion of every sacrifice instead. Every Greek home and city kept a hearth fire in her honor, treating hospitality as sacred.
