Arianrhod

Intention: Ask for sovereignty over your own name and fate

Offerings & Symbols

  • Silver
  • A small tower or castle image (her home is Caer Arianrhod)
  • Something you named or claimed for yourself

Culture: Welsh (Celtic)   Domain: The moon and stars, personal sovereignty

Arianrhod, whose name means "silver wheel," is closely associated with the moon, stars, and a mysterious sea-tower home called Caer Arianrhod; in the Mabinogion's Fourth Branch, she resists naming and arming her son Lleu, and each refusal is cleverly overturned by Gwydion, a story often read today as reclaiming her own agency within a story that repeatedly works against her.

Associations

The moon and stars, personal sovereignty, boundaries, reclaiming one's own narrative.

Ways people honor her (modern)

  • Reclaim a boundary or decision that others have tried to override
  • Work with moon phases and star imagery
  • Read the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogion, and modern reappraisals of her role
  • Reflect on the right to withhold consent, even from family

Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
