Hecate is a goddess of crossroads, magic and liminal spaces, often shown holding twin torches and accompanied by dogs. Hesiod's Theogony describes her as honored by Zeus above all, with power over sky, earth and sea alike; later tradition increasingly associated her with witchcraft, the moon and the underworld, and she became a favorite figure of Hellenistic magic.
