Chaos

Intention: Sit with the formless space before creation begins

Offerings & Symbols

  • An empty bowl
  • Darkness or an unlit candle
  • Blank paper

Culture: Ancient Greek   Domain: The primordial void, the first state of existence

Chaos, in Hesiod's Theogony, is not disorder in the modern sense but the yawning gap or void that existed before anything else, the very first thing to come into being, from which Gaia, Tartarus, Eros and Nyx emerged. It represents pure potential: the necessary empty space that creation needs in order to begin.

Associations

The void before creation, pure potential, the necessary empty space, beginnings before form.

Ways people honor them (modern)

  • Sit with unstructured, empty time before starting a new project
  • Practice meditation focused on open, spacious awareness
  • Keep an empty bowl or blank page as an altar reminder of potential
  • Read the opening lines of Hesiod's Theogony, where Chaos comes first

Approach any deity with respect and do your own research. Practices vary widely between traditions, and modern devotional practice often goes beyond what survives in ancient sources.
